ART FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Introduction
As an artist, I always felt compelled to investigate my interest in street art. I have always had this urge to paint huge walls, give back to the society and do something and create a difference. My final year project aroused a curiosity within me to further investigate and yield a more educated understanding of how art can make a difference.  In today’s world we often feel untouched by the problems of others, not feeling strongly enough that we are a part of a global community and even when we could easily do something to help, we don’t. Life in cities and neighborhoods have become so serious these days, people go and do their business, children to adults always in a rush. We are so busy fulfilling each other’s never ending wants and needs that we have forgotten to appreciate the small things in life. Thus, we need creative thinking, particularly when communities are facing big challenges in both, personal as well as on a global level.
Through my project, this is what I aimed to strive for: a point where all participants are valued for their unique contributions for their community, to reflect the life of the people who belong to the organization and bring smiles on the faces of the people living in the neighborhood.
Final Project Brief
PURPOSE:
It is one of the biggest questions that comes to mind when we really, truly think about the value of art: can art make a difference? The purpose of my final project brief is to offer children and adults an opportunity to create art through a meaningful and creative concept which will not only beautify and enhance the neighborhood but also promote and highlight the organisation I have collaborated with.
TARGET AUDIENCE:
Volunteers of all age group are most welcome even those who do not belong to the organisation.
WHERE:
The space is a humble one storey building in the slums.
HOW:
Through painting creative concepts on the exterior walls.

BACKGROUND:
Great public art has the power to make us think, feel and in some special cases change the world. A collaborative, neighborhood-based art-making process can enhance the community by creating unique and dramatic experiences for the people while also redefining public spaces, re-energizing neighborhoods, educate and foster greater pride of the place.
CHALLENGE:
- To provide the people of the organisation a dynamic experience throughout the journey.
- To help build their self esteem and express themselves through a visual means.
- To influence the lives of the people in the neighbourhood.
WHAT’S ESSENTIAL:
- To keep in mind the values and beliefs of the organisation.
- To make a concept which reflects the organisation.

Concept 1
When something changes around us positively or negatively, there are different ways we learn to cope with the change. It often becomes easier to judge, label and shut curiosity and step outside of love in situations when we don't concur with people's ways to cope, when we don't clearly understand.
What if we didn't take things personally and could stay anchored in genuine curiosity and love? Where would or could we go from there?
(Arya, 2018)
This concept of the tree is a symbol of prosperity, growth and life, staying anchored in the soil and blossoming and dancing beyond the clouds, reaching for the sky, soaring new heights because the sky is not the limit.

Concept 2
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. – Winston Churchill
The hand gesture reflects compassion. We open up our heart to hold onto the trust. That’s what it takes to make it through life too- an understanding, a give and take, creating a ripple effect, enhancing the success of people around you and pulling them into light from darkness. Because in the end we’re all just dreamers and those who work hard towards achieving their dreams, the universe conspires to make it happen.

At those times when life’s storms rain down turn those blue skies grey, try to spread sunshine.
